With recording-breaking wildfires, droughts and floods, climate change is knocking at our door. Yet for many of us, it is easier to ignore the changing climate than engage emotionally. For one, it is too abstract, for the other, too overwhelming.

This concert invites us to explore our own emotional reactions to the changing climate. What is happening to the planet, and how do we feel about it? As our emotional paralysis melts, we can be inspired to meaningful action rather than inaction. The program will include Q&A with the audience.

The concert will also feature ‘Earth’s Gift’ for flute, oboe, clarinet, trumpet and piano, by the British composer Kate Honey and Dutch visual artist Emma van der Steen.

MAY 9, 2019 COLLABORATIVE CONCERT OF STUDENT WORKS, SAN FRANCISCO CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC

Our on-going collaboration with the San Francisco Conservatory of Music’s Technology and Applied Composition Program (TAC) culminated again this year with a concert of student ClimateMusic compositions. This year’s show took place at San Francisco’s popular Exploratorium on the evening of May 9th.

TAC Studio Director Taurin Barrera and the students of his Theory of Musical Synthesis class grappled over the semester with the realities of climate change, as introduced by our very own Dr. Alison Marklein, who also prepared multiple narratives about climate change drawing from the science and backed by data for the students’ exploration and use. Composer Erik Ian Walker talked with the students about his experience in composing Climate as well. Each student then wrote custom software to translate historical climate data and predictive data models into electronic instruments and musical parameters. With this data as the seed, the young composers premiered a range of remarkable compositions exploring the urgent issue of climate change through sound.

Our friends at Kinetech Arts  developed the advanced data animations that accompany the music, and Arup helped us frame the context of the evening through an outstanding multimedia presentation.  Our solutions partners The Global Footprint Network, Re-Volv, Cool Effect, and SF Environment were on hand to absorb the energy of the crowd following the performance.
